Link Building – Part 1

Link building is an important aspect of website search engine optimization (SEO) since not all visitors to the site arrive through organic searches; many arrive from other sites or from paid ads through links. Internal links connecting different pages of the site improve navigation for visitors and web spiders. External links from other websites not only bring additional traffic, many search engines will give higher ranking to a site based on the number of its incoming links (‘link popularity’).

Considering the advantages, link building to other sites should be actively pursued once a website is operational (internal linking should be addressed at the website design stage itself). Link building normally takes the form of ‘Link Campaigns’ to persuade other website owners or site managers to link to the site by providing correct information about the site and its contents. This can usually be best achieved by embedding the links in specific keywords or phrases i.e. including the right keywords in the anchor texts of the links. This also increases quality traffic and improves conversions.

Many websites include a ‘Link-To-Us’ function; an HTML link-to-us coding which can be copied and pasted in the webpage source code of the site wanting to link in. The essential point to remember for effective link building, however, is that other websites will consider linking to the site only if they feel that it is worth their while. Hence, firstly, the website content has to be informative and useful and secondly, the linking process should be simple; one that needs the least amount of work for linking to the site.

Driving traffic to your website

The aim of SEO is to drive traffic to your website. This can be done in several ways. The traditional way is to get listed with search engines. Search engine optimization means understanding keyword density and providing relevant content. There are two main search engines today: Google and Bing. Both these have their own algorithm based on which they rank your website.

Since link building is a huge part of SEO, it is necessary to create suitable links with other websites. Buying and exchanging links is now a big market.

Driving traffic purely through search engines is no longer an optimal solution. With the phenomenal growth of social sites like Facebook, MySpace and others, it is now necessary to engage ourselves with them. By participating in various forums, it is possible to drive relevant and focused traffic to your website.

Video sites like YouTube have gained importance. It is possible to create a viral marketing campaign using popular videos which are initially hosted on video sites. You can generate a humungous amount of traffic with videos.

In SEO circles it is said that content is king. Search engines love content. Your search engine ranking is likely to get a boost if you provide good quality content on your website. You must remember to use appropriate keyword density to attract search engines. Search engine bots look for any change or additional content when crawling through websites. Static content does not enthuse these bots.

Driving traffic to your website requires thrust from several angles. SEO alone is unlikely to make your site wildly successful. Social sites should be leveraged to boost traffic to your site. In the final analysis, it is the quality and quantity of your content which will determine whether your site attracts traffic. Everything else can only assist in adding to the numbers.

What Is AdSense?

Sometimes we overlook the obvious. In case of AdSense this is all the more relevant. Do you have a website or blog which is generates traffic? If so Google AdSense is for you. You can monetize the website by simply joining   Google AdSense. The reason why search engine professionals or even beginners should join this is because it reveals the entire secret behind the Google search engine philosophy. By joining Google AdSense you will be able to see the advertisement which is displayed on your site. Since these advertisements are linked to the content on your website, you can draw relevant conclusions as to the importance of certain search terms or phrases. Since, you are looking to discover the most appropriate keywords you can use those which seem most effective.

The Google AdSense campaign is a process you can effectively use for reverse engineering. This can be made more effective by changing the content on your website and then examining the advertisement thrown out by Google. This is a fascinating method which is iterative. If you observe certain keywords attracting more effective and relevant advertisements you can modify your keywords for improving your search engine ranking. You can go back and forth through the process till you achieve the necessary refinement in your optimization effort.

Google AdSense is a secret weapon which opens up the inner working of Google search engine. This results in better traffic to your website which in turn elevates your search engine ranking as well. The best part is that you don’t spend a penny doing this. An overall SEO strategy consisting of Google AdWords, AdSense and organic search can give your ranking a tremendous boost. Most of the people who are new to SEO don’t realize that much of the Google magic or mystery can be solved by using their own tools.  In fact, Google itself provides extensive guidelines for search engine optimization since it has more to gain from it.

Service Specific Keywords

Service specific keywords are a sub-set of business specific keywords especially geared for service oriented businesses. Whatever be the industry segment and service offering, the success of a website (and, consequently, of the business it represents) depends on its ability to achieve high search engine rankings and conversions. This will, in turn, depend upon the inclusion of relevant and focused keywords (service-specific keywords) within the content pages.
50 Kick-Ass Keyword Strategies

Service specific keywords (and, in fact, all business or product specific keywords) need to be carefully developed  by identifying  and combining important product or service features (usually known to the business owner) with market specific characteristics such as customer demographics, buying habits, geographical delineation etc (available through market research and keyword research initiatives). The aim should be to try and identify keywords that potential customers are likely to use.

As with all business specific keywords, most service specific keywords are long tail keyword phrases (generally 3 – 4 keyword phrases). They tend to decrease the frequency of ad displays for paid advertising (many websites offer advertising based on keyword targeting so an advertisers banner will only show when a specific keyword is entered);  or reduce the volume of general website traffic (which can, however, be balanced with inclusion of some judiciously chosen broad-match single-word keywords) for organic searches. However, the traffic generated, albeit lesser in volume, is highly focused and amenable (qualified) to a higher rate of conversion. It is advisable to include location specific markers in the service specific keywords if the business caters to local markets or to a geographically delineated market.

Business Specific Keywords

It is being increasingly acknowledged that business specific keywords are crucial for the success of an Internet based business in today’s crowded and competitive online marketing space. One of the main objectives of having a website by a business is to make net users worldwide aware of the business. The website, in addition to providing information, must also enable a visitor to enquire about the products and services on offer and facilitate conversions. This can be achieved if well chosen and relevant business specific keywords are included in the website; keywords that precisely describe exactly what the business provides, such as specific product names, model numbers etc.

Business owners having (or planning to have) websites must work to identify business specific keywords that are relevant to their product-market mix and creatively weave such keywords into the website content with direct relevance to the specific web page the content is on. Business websites should not only be user friendly, they must also be search engine friendly. An effective strategy to achieve this when using business specific keywords is to incorporate business specific keywords as search engine friendly naming conventions for web pages.

Business specific keywords are mostly long-tailed keyword phrases.  They may likely reduce general traffic to a business website for organic searches or the display frequency of pay-per-click (PPC) ads, but users entering specific keywords are typically more likely to buy; being in the final stages of the buying decision. Business-specific keywords will also help increase the search engine rankings of a business website; an added bonus!
